In addition, we will also have a select number of historic treasures from the Archives vaults on special display for the day. These items include letters from John Hancock (dated July 4, 1776 and July 6, 1776) announcing the Declaration of Independence and our separation from Great Britain; a Council Order dated July 17, 1776 directing how the Declaration Independence should be made public; a 1781 warrant signed by John Hancock for expenses related to the celebration of the anniversary of our Independence; a Revolutionary War Pension Schedule for “Heroine of the Commonwealth” Deborah Sampson Gannett; an Officers Account Book from the War of 1812 with one of the earliest written references to the phrase “Uncle Sam”; and a letter from Robert Gould Shaw regarding the deployment of the Mass. 54th Regiment in preparation for the attack on Ft. Wagner, SC. The Massachusetts Archives Facility is located on Columbia Point (220 Morrissey Blvd., Boston 02125) next door to the JFK Library and Edward M. Kennedy Institute. Admission to the Archives and Commonwealth Museum is free.
